There are a whole host of solutions for organizing shoes. From shoe cabinets to over the door shoe organizers there are not only organizers to fit your rooms, but a surprising number of options for shoe organizers.

One solution is to use a shoe cubby. These are more open storage, and hence are lower cost than a shoe cabinet. Make sure if you are buying a cubby to find one with slots that are large enough for the shoes you want to store, especially if you are using this for the man of the house. They come in a number of colors and sizes, make sure you have the vertical space available for the cubby you choose as well.

In other words, measure before you buy!

One of the most popular styles are the over the door shoe organizers. These take advantage of the space right near the door that often is unused when the closet door is closed. In addition, they are typically not made of expensive materials like wood, so they fall in the low end of the cost range for these organizers. Similar to these in cost and construction are hanging shoe holders, which do take up space on the hanging rods in the closet and more closet space.

One of the traditional solutions are the free standing shoe racks. These often hold the shoe on a small rail that puts the shoe in a vertical position and will create vertical space even on a single layer rack.

Shoe cabinets fall in the other end of the spectrum. These can be inexpensive, with simple white cabinets made of laminate over particle board, but there are also fine pieces of furniture that run several hundred dollars but are the type of furniture that can be featured in the bedroom decor. Many new homes have large closets with built-in shoe cubbies and shelves for storage.

Of course many folks will use shoe organizers in other rooms of the home. You can store crafts, use them in the garage for odds and ends, or storing the kids small toys up and off the floor as well as storing their shoes.

If you really want to save money on a shoe organizer, you can even make a one from recycled cardboard. Here's a couple of videos on making your own shoe organizer. One demonstrates using cardboard, the other is more traditional shelving materials.

Finally, some folks have come up with a very non traditional uses for shoe organizers. one of the more popular these days it to use a shoe organizer as a vertical herb garden.
